World Player of the Week: Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in superlative form this season for Real Madrid, and he was on fire for Los Blancos in the past week, scoring four goals in two games to take his tally to a record 41 league strikes in 2011-12.
The Portugal international was decisive in Madrid’s 4-1 victory over rivals Atletico in the derby at the Vicente Calderon, scoring a hat-trick. He powered home a stunning free-kick, added a second with a fierce dipping shot, before completing his treble from the penalty spot.

Ronaldo further improved his imperious goal record on Saturday, helping to defeat Sporting Gijon 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 27-year-old headed his side’s crucial second goal, ensuring that Jose Mourinho’s side remain on target to lift the Primera Division title.

Honourable Mentions

Fenerbahce

Cristian Baroni – Fenerbahce

Baroni was the star performer in Turkey this weekend as he helped his side get the better of Trabzonspor. The Brazilian midfielder was at the heart of both the goals that the Turkish giants scored in their 2-0 home victory, scoring a stunner from 30 yards and then providing the assist for Moussa Sow’s lovely strike.

Salvador Cabanas

Salvador Cabanas – 12 de Octubre
Cabanas made his first professional appearance for more than two years in 12 de Octubre’s 2-0 win over Martin Ledesma in the Primera B Metropolitana on Saturday, completing a miraculous recovery after being shot in the head at point-blank range in Mexico City. The 31-year-old was substituted after 40 minutes in what was his first official game since the incident in January 2010.

Ajax

Siem de Jong – Ajax

De Jong scored his first-ever hat-trick in Ajax’s 5-0 victory over title rivals Heerenveen on Wednesday. The forward then went on to set up the opener in the Amsterdam side’s 3-1 win over De Graafschap on Sunday. Ajax have gone six points clear of AZ and Feyenoord in the table following their latest two triumphs.

Borussia Dortmund

Lukasz Piszczek – Borussia Dortmund

Lukasz Piszczek’s performances over the past week for Borussia Dortmund have proven to be vital as they look set to retain their Bundesliga crown. The right-back got the better of Franck Ribery in BVB’s 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich and was then decisive in the Ruhr derby against Schalke at the weekend, scoring the equaliser in their 2-1 victory.

Manchester City

Carlos Tevez – Manchester City

The Argentine netted a hat-trick for Manchester City in their 6-1 away victory over Norwich to maintain their title hopes. Tevez was also on target on Wednesday in his first start for Roberto Mancini’s side since September, as the Citizens cruised to a 4-0 triumph over West Bromwich Albion. Tevez’s return has given City a renewed sense of hope at the business end of the season.

On Sunday we encouraged our readers to nominate their choices for the best player of the week and here are some of your comments:

Juelz Banda in Malawi felt that Tevez should be given the award for his excellent performances for Manchester City in the Premier League in the past seven days.
“Carlos Tevez, definitely him with his brilliant hat-trick against Norwich. I’m sure Mancini is regretting already  dropping the striker. He showed them what they have been missing all this while.”

Irtza in Pakistan, though, agreed with our choice of Ronaldo.

“Ronaldo should be awarded as player of the week because of his spectacular derby performance in circumstances where Madrid were under huge pressure. I think he gave probably his best performance of the season so far, and also scored an important goal against Gijon at weekend. On the other hand, Messi also did well in a difficult fixture against Levante but I think Cr7 was ahead of him and anybody else this week.”

However, El iNigeria backed Lionel Messi for the accolade.
“Lionel Messi: scores in midweek and adds a superb brace to drag Barca out of defeat and back in the title race. Honourable mentions to Tevez for hitting a hat-trick that kept Man City in the title race. To Mosorini for living up to the end for his club. To Brandao for helping Marseille; winless in 10 out of the last 11 matches to the Coupe de Ligue. To Ronaldo for scoring an away hat-trick to help in his team’s title race.”

Aziz in Kuwait voted for Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero for his winning goal against Lazio last week.

“Either Ronaldo or Alex Del Piero. I’d honestly choose Alex. Came off the bench, got the job done from an excellent free kick, gave Juve the 3 points, and proved how decisive and legendary he is yet again.”

Ross Middlemass in Edinburgh went for Hibernian captain James McPake for his performance against Aberdeen at the weekend.

“James McPake! Captained Hibernian to the Scottish Cup final being a colossus at the back, guiding them away from the relegation zone also. Smaller league yes but his contribution should not be over looked. Fantastic performance!”

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world, says Sergio Ramos

The Blancos defender has taken the time to praise the Portugal international, and hailed the team’s ability to overcome the pressure of the Primera Division title race

Cristiano Ronaldo

Sergio Ramos has voiced his admiration of team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of Real Madrid’s 4-1 La Liga win over Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday evening.

The Portugal international netted a hat-trick to help the Santiago Bernabeu side to a crucial victory in the race for the league title, and Ramos had nothing but praise for the former Manchester United star.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world. We’re lucky to train with him every day and to have him with us,” Ramos was quoted as saying by reporters.

“Taking three points was vital after drawing against Valencia. A team like Real Madrid lives with pressure, but we know how to withstand it and we have to be ready for everything. Each match is a matter of life and death.

“We earned an important victory. Everything turned out well and we’re calm. We don’t think Barcelona are going to drop many points, but we depend on ourselves and our four-point cushion allows us to keep up the good work.”

Real Madrid resume league action on Saturday when they host Sporting Gijon, before facing Barcelona at Camp Nou on April 21.

Starting last month and continuing for 10 weeks, Goal.com is publishing exclusive extracts from Luca Caioli’s new book, Ronaldo: The Obsession for Perfection. The fourth extract, published on Friday, looks at his stunning goalscoring debut for Sporting Lisbon and early comparisons with the Brazilian Ronaldo. Don’t miss it!

Ronaldo Eyes Finishing Line in Title Chase

RonaldoMadrid. Cristiano Ronaldo feels that Liga leaders Real Madrid are now closing in on the title as they prepare to face struggling Sporting Gijon at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.

The Portuguese star scored his seventh hat-trick of the season as Real beat neighbors Atletico 4-1 on Wednesday to restore their four-point lead at the top of the table.

The pressure had been growing on Jose Mourinho’s team as their lead – which sat at 10 points in mid-March – was whittled down to one in the wake of Barcelona’s 4-0 victory over Getafe on Tuesday.

But, after some tense moments with the score tied at 1-1 at the Vicente Calderon, Ronaldo made the difference before substitute Jose Callejon got the other goal.

“Still there is a little way to go but the league is near now. We were anxious going into the game as we knew that Barca had won but now we are relaxed,” said Ronaldo, who has already equalled his record-breaking tally of 40 league goals, set last season.

That figure leaves him one ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, although the Argentine has the most in all competitions with 61.

“Losing is not a word in my vocabulary. We knew it would be a difficult game against Atletico and they played very well so I am happy with the result. I am not looking for personal records but titles for Real Madrid and I have to thank my teammates because without them I would not have scored,” added Ronaldo.

April is a crunch month for Madrid and will go a long way to deciding their destiny in the title race.

Having taken four points from two league games against Valencia and Atletico, they still have a tough Champions League semi-final tie with Bayern Munich to come either side of their trip to the Camp Nou to face Barca in El Clasico.

Barcelona are pushing Real all the way having won their last 10 league games in succession but, as they prepare to travel to the season’s surprise package Levante, midfielder Sergio Busquets points out that they are still reliant on the leaders dropping more points.

“It will be difficult to win the league but not impossible and they still have to come here to play us. They have the advantage which we have had in the past and we have been champions but all we can do is go game by game,” he said.

“Looking at the picture overall then we do have a good chance but we now have a difficult game against Levante. Madrid at the moment are first, they have a great team and deserve to be where they are but we are trying to make up the distance.”

Meanwhile, Valencia have responded to recent a dip in form with a well-earned draw at the Bernabeu and a comprehensive win over Rayo Vallecano but they now have a tough trip on Sunday to an Espanyol side who are still in the hunt for a place in Europe.

Malaga are Valencia’s biggest rivals in the battle for third place, and Manuel Pellegrini’s side are in action at home to Real Sociedad.

Athletic Bilbao have just one win in seven games and are in need of a positive result as they prepare to entertain Mallorca at San Mames, while sixth-placed Osasuna travel to Betis.

Atletico have a second Madrid derby in five days as they face a Rayo Vallecano side who are one of the most unpredictable in La Liga.

Elsewhere on Sunday, there are key games at the foot of the table as Racing Santander go to Villarreal while Zaragoza entertain Granada.

Michel takes his Sevilla side to former club Getafe in the Monday night game which will be vital for the European ambitions of both teams.

Cristiano Ronaldo one booking away from suspension for Barcelona v Real Madrid clash

Real Madrid will look to take another step towards reclaiming the Liga title this weekend, but will do so knowing that star man Cristiano Ronaldo is walking a disciplinary tightrope.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Wednesday night’s 4-1 win at rivals Atletico Madrid helped them restore their four-point lead at the top over reigning champions Barcelona, with the April 21 meeting between the two looming large and seemingly gaining added significance with every passing day.

Madrid face a home meeting with Sporting Gijon before that, though, but know that should Ronaldo pick up a yellow card, he would miss El Clásicothrough suspension.

His hat-trick last night took him to 40 league goals for the season – he has 51 in total – and Madrid can ill afford to lose him for what could be a title decider.

“The team is in good form, confident and ready for its next game,” Ronaldo told realmadrid.com.
